Amit Shah Launches India's First LNG Dual-Fuel Train in Gujarat
In a significant leap toward sustainable transportation, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah officially inaugurated India’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel train. The historic ceremony took place on September 27, 2026, in Sabarmati, Gujarat, where the Minister was joined by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to flag off the new technology. This launch is a cornerstone of a massive railway development initiative in the region, valued at over ₹1,500 crore.
Revolutionizing Rail with LNG Technology
The groundbreaking train utilizes two 1,400 HP Driving Power Cars (DPCs) that have been specially converted to operate on an LNG-diesel dual-fuel system. This technological feat was achieved by the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot, with the core components developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. To manage the fuel, advanced cryogenic systems were supplied by INOX India Limited (INOXCVA).
This shift to dual-fuel technology is designed to make the railways more environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Key benefits include:
- Reduced Diesel Dependency: The system is engineered to replace approximately 40% of traditional diesel consumption with LNG.
- Lower Emissions: The technology significantly reduces the release of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate matter.
- Proven Reliability: Following extensive field trials covering more than 2,000 km, the system has demonstrated it can maintain the same power and reliability as conventional diesel engines.
