Central Railway Boosts Amla Reservoir Capacity 3.5x

In a significant move towards sustainable water management, Central Railway has successfully completed a massive de-silting project at the Amla reservoir. Located within the Nagpur Division, this strategic initiative has resulted in a staggering 3.5-fold increase in the reservoir's water storage capacity.

Massive Expansion in Water Storage

The scale of the transformation is immense. Before the intervention, the Amla reservoir could only hold 9.37 crore liters of water. Following the extensive silt removal and repair works, which were finalized on October 10, 2026, the capacity has surged to a massive 33.19 crore liters.

To achieve this remarkable expansion, railway authorities undertook a large-scale excavation process to clear out accumulated debris. The technical details of the project include:

  • Silt Excavated: Approximately 2.38 lakh cubic meters.
  • Area Covered: A vast area measuring 300 meters by 198.5 meters.
  • Average Depth: The excavation reached an average depth of four meters.

Ensuring Water Security and Quality

The primary objective of this project was to ensure a consistent and reliable water supply for essential railway operational requirements. Beyond simply increasing the volume, the de-silting process was also designed to enhance the overall quality of the water stored within the reservoir.

This initiative comes as a proactive response to findings detailed in a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, which had highlighted concerns regarding the quality of drinking water within the railway network. By addressing these issues head-on, Central Railway is taking decisive steps to improve resource reliability.

Commitment to Sustainability and Swachhata

Dr. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, emphasized that the project is a testament to the railway's dedication to infrastructure maintenance and sustainable development.

The project underscores the railway's commitment to improved water resource management, infrastructure maintenance, and sustainable development.

Furthermore, the successful completion of this work aligns with several major cleanliness and efficiency drives, including the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign, 'Swachhata Pakhwada', and 'Special Campaign 6.0'.
