Amrit Bharat Express Brake Binding Averted; Gateman Honored

A vigilant gateman in the Kharagpur division has successfully prevented a potential disaster by spotting an Amrit Bharat Express brake binding issue during his duty.

The Incident at Crossing 54

The incident took place on the night of October 15, 2026, at approximately 11:47 PM. Gopal Nath, a gateman stationed at level crossing number 54 between the Amarda Road and Jaleswar stations, was on duty when the Charlaapalli-Kamakhya Amrit Bharat Express (Train No. 15673) passed through.

During the transit, Gopal Nath noticed a critical technical failure: the train's brakes were sticking to the wheels, a dangerous condition known as brake binding.

Swift Action Prevents Disaster

Recognizing the immediate danger, Gopal Nath acted with incredible speed to ensure the safety of the train and its passengers. His quick response included:

  • Displaying a red hand signal to alert the train crew immediately.
  • Notifying the Station Master at Amarda Road about the situation.
  • Ensuring the overhead electrical supply was cut to allow for a safe emergency stop.

Why Brake Binding is Dangerous

Brake binding is a serious mechanical issue that can lead to severe consequences if not addressed instantly. If the brakes remain stuck, it can cause:

  • Extreme overheating of the wheels.
  • Wheel slippage on the tracks.
  • A high risk of the train derailing.

DRM Honors the Brave Gateman

In recognition of his vigilance and sense of duty, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Lalit Mohan Pandey honored Gopal Nath on Tuesday. The gateman was awarded a cash prize and a certificate of appreciation for his timely intervention.

The railway administration emphasized its commitment to honoring employees who contribute significantly to safe railway operations through their alertness and responsibility.
