Ashwini Vaishnaw Outlines ₹71,000 Cr Amrit Bharat Station Upgrade

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has emphasized that the massive redevelopment projects currently underway will fundamentally transform the appearance and functionality of railway stations across India. Centered on the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, these modernization efforts aim to provide world-class facilities to millions of passengers.
'Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi': Blending Heritage with Modernity
The modernization initiative is driven by the theme 'Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi', which seeks to integrate contemporary amenities with the structural heritage of Indian stations. This ensures that as stations evolve into modern hubs, their cultural identity remains intact.
Scale of the Transformation
The scale of the ongoing redevelopment is immense. As of February 2026, the Ministry of Railways has already completed the redevelopment of 172 stations. The scope of the project is even larger, with a total of 1,337 stations identified for comprehensive upgrades. To achieve this, a projected investment exceeding ₹71,000 crore has been earmarked.
Key amenities being introduced under this scheme include:
- Improved station access and parking zones
- Upgraded waiting rooms and seating arrangements
- Modernized toilets and enhanced drinking water facilities
- Inclusive infrastructure for divyangjan (persons with disabilities)
Execution and Agency Roles
The Ministry of Railways is spearheading this massive operation, utilizing both direct budgetary support and Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models. Key nodal agencies driving the development include the Indian Railway Station Development Corporation Limited (IRSDC) and the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA).
Major Project Updates: Delhi and Mumbai
Specific high-profile projects are already showing significant progress across the country:
Delhi Station Modernization
In the national capital, 13 key stations are undergoing significant modernization, including New Delhi, Old Delhi, Anand Vihar Terminal, and Hazrat Nizamuddin. At the New Delhi railway station, the Ajmeri Gate waiting area is now complete, while work continues on the basement and elevated road foundations on the Paharganj side.
Mumbai CSMT Redevelopment
In Mumbai, the redevelopment of the CSMT station involves a 75-day traffic and power block scheduled until December 15, 2026. Due to this work, eight long-distance trains have been rescheduled to accommodate the infrastructure upgrades.
This massive push toward world-class infrastructure follows the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2023 for the redevelopment of 508 stations at an estimated cost of ₹25,000 crore.
