Anand Vihar Terminal Gets Mega Upgrade for Festive Rush

Indian Railways is fast-tracking Anand Vihar Terminal upgrades to manage the massive influx of travelers expected during the upcoming festive season. To prevent platform overcrowding, the Ministry is accelerating the construction of dedicated 'Yatri Suvidha Kendras' (Passenger Holding Areas).

Decongesting Platforms with Yatri Suvidha Kendras

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna reviewed the progress of these essential facilities on August 14, 2026. The primary goal is to provide a comfortable waiting space for waitlisted and unticketed passengers, ensuring that the main platforms remain clear for boarding and alighting during peak hours.

The project is being executed in two strategic phases to maximize efficiency:

  • Phase 1: This initial stage will accommodate approximately 4,000 passengers.
  • Phase 2: The expansion will increase the total capacity to hold 7,000 passengers simultaneously.

World-Class Amenities for Passengers

These new holding areas are designed to provide a seamless experience for commuters waiting for their trains. Passengers can expect a wide range of modern amenities, including:

  • Spacious seating areas to ensure comfort during long waits.
  • Dedicated ticketing counters for quick assistance and queries.
  • Gender-segregated toilets and clean drinking water facilities.
  • Enhanced safety through CCTV surveillance and robust lighting.
  • Public address systems to provide real-time travel updates.

Special Trains to Ease Festive Travel

To further manage the heavy demand, Northern Railway has announced a massive fleet of special trains. Between October 1 and November 30, 2026, hundreds of special services will operate to connect key destinations. Notable routes include:

  • Daily services between Anand Vihar and Patliputra.
  • Daily services between Anand Vihar and Ayodhya Cantt.

Ensuring Accessibility for All

While upgrading infrastructure, Indian Railways remains committed to inclusivity. Anand Vihar Terminal continues to provide essential accessibility features such as ramps, lifts, and escalators. Furthermore, in accordance with current regulations, UDID cardholders are permitted to travel in designated Divyang coaches across various train categories, including Mail and Express services.
