Anwarganj Station Redevelopment: Completion Set for Dec 2026

The landscape of rail travel in the region is set for a massive transformation as the Anwarganj Station Redevelopment project moves into high gear. Under the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the station is expected to undergo a complete overhaul, with completion slated for December 2026.
To ensure the project stays on track, Prayagraj Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Rajneesh Agarwal conducted a detailed site inspection on Friday, October 9, 2026. During his visit, the DRM emphasized the critical need for high construction quality and strict adherence to timelines. Accompanying him were Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Harimohan and Deputy Chief Traffic Manager Akanshu Govil.
The ₹1,115 Crore Elevated Track Project
Beyond the station itself, a massive infrastructure project is underway to modernize the rail corridor. The 15.5-kilometer Mandhana-Anwarganj elevated railway track project, carrying a significant budget of ₹1,115 crore, is progressing steadily. This project is designed to revolutionize local transit by eliminating 18 existing railway crossings, thereby reducing road congestion and improving safety.
Kanpur District Magistrate Mahendra Singh Tawar recently reviewed the project's progress. To keep the momentum going, he has ordered accelerated efforts to resolve ongoing land acquisition hurdles involving Central UP Gas Limited (CUGL) and Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam. As the project advances, the current tracks between Anwarganj and Mandhana will be dismantled to allow for the construction of deep pillars required for the elevated structure.
New Station Naming and Infrastructure Changes
The redevelopment will also bring significant changes to the local station network. As part of the modernization plan, the existing Kalyanpur and Rawatpur stations will be discontinued. In their place, a brand-new station will be established, which is set to be named after the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
To facilitate the heavy construction required for the new tracks, authorities are also working to clear illegal encroachments along the route to ensure the project remains on its strict schedule.
Alert: Major Train Disruptions Expected
Passengers planning to travel through this section should prepare for significant changes to their schedules. A two-year mega block is proposed to commence on December 1, 2026. This period will be dedicated to intensive track construction and is expected to result in:
- Train Cancellations: Several services may be completely halted during the construction phase.
- Train Diversions: Many trains will be rerouted through alternative paths.
- Partial Terminations: Some trains may only run for a portion of their usual route.
Rail authorities urge commuters to check updated schedules regularly to avoid inconvenience during this period of massive infrastructural growth.
