18,000 Special Trains for Festivals: Ashwini Vaishnaw Reviews NDLS

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a massive scale-up in railway services to accommodate the upcoming festive rush. During a review of preparations at the New Delhi Railway Station (Ajmeri Gate side), it was revealed that approximately 18,000 special trains will be operated this year to cater to passengers during Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja.

Massive Boost in Special Train Services

To manage the heavy influx of passengers, the Ministry of Railways is significantly increasing the number of special services. While around 12,000 special trains were operated during the last festive season, this year the number has been bumped up to 18,000. This move aims to support the estimated two crore passengers expected to travel from the Delhi region during the peak festival period.

AI-Powered Crowd Management at New Delhi Station

The New Delhi Railway Station is undergoing technological and structural upgrades to ensure a smoother passenger experience. Key highlights include:

  • AI-Enabled Surveillance: More than 700 AI-enabled cameras have been installed this year. These cameras allow authorities to monitor passenger movement in real-time and redistribute crowds to prevent overcrowding.
  • Streamlined Entry: To eliminate confusion caused by multiple entry points, a dedicated holding area has been established for passengers with reserved tickets. This common area replaces the previous system of six separate entry gates.
  • Enhanced Waiting Spaces: Luggage-checking facilities have been moved outside the main station area. This has allowed the former ticketing zone to be converted into a spacious waiting area for passengers.

Security and Peak Hour Arrangements

In addition to the surge in train services, the Minister emphasized that additional RPF deployment and extra special trains will be arranged to manage the increased movement during peak hours. These measures are designed to ensure that passengers can board their trains with minimal delay and maximum safety.
