Assam Connectivity Surge: Second Saraighat Rail-cum-Road Bridge Work to Begin!
A massive boost to the infrastructure of Northeast India is on the horizon. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced that piling work for the highly anticipated second Saraighat rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra River in Assam is scheduled to commence in October 2026.
A Multi-Billion Rupee Engineering Marvel
This ambitious infrastructure project, valued at approximately ₹1,473.77 crore, has been entrusted to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for execution. Following the approval of detailed estimates by the Railway Board in early 2024 and the finalization of engineering designs in March 2025, the project is now moving into its active execution phase.
To ensure the new bridge integrates seamlessly with the existing rail network, the Ministry of Railways also sanctioned the doubling of a 7.20 km railway section between Agthori and Kamakhya stations in 2024.
Double-Decker Design and Technical Specifications
The new bridge will span a length of 1.3 km and feature a sophisticated double-decker structure designed to handle both rail and road traffic simultaneously:
- Lower Deck: Dedicated to accommodating two railway lines.
- Upper Deck: A three-lane road carriageway equipped with a footpath for pedestrians.
To maintain the highest standards of structural integrity, the project will incorporate advanced digital monitoring and bridge instrumentation systems, ensuring long-term safety through real-time technological oversight.
Overcoming Hurdles and Looking Ahead
While large-scale urban projects often face delays, the development of the second Saraighat bridge has seen significant progress in resolving complex issues. With the active support of the Assam government and local administration, major challenges regarding land acquisition, utility shifting, and the removal of encroachments in urban areas have been largely addressed.
The project is being closely monitored by the Railway Board and is being coordinated with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to ensure smooth road approaches.
Timeline and Expected Impact
The project is currently targeted for completion by December 2029. Once operational, the bridge is expected to:
- Significantly reduce traffic congestion on the existing Saraighat Bridge.
- Enhance seamless connectivity across Assam and the wider Northeast region.
