Indian Railways is taking a massive leap in high-speed rail technology with the development of the indigenous B35 bullet train. Capable of reaching staggering speeds of 350 kmph, this ambitious project is set to revolutionize connectivity across several major regions in the country.

Seven New High-Speed Corridors Planned

The B35 trainsets are slated for deployment across seven strategic high-speed rail corridors. These new routes are designed to significantly reduce travel time between major economic and cultural hubs:

B28 Trainsets and Manufacturing Progress

While the B35 project pushes the boundaries of speed, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is also overseeing the delivery of B28 high-speed trainsets. These units feature a design speed of 280 kmph.

Manufacturing for these B28 units is being carried out by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in Bengaluru. The industry is eagerly awaiting the first prototypes, which are expected to begin trials in the first quarter of 2027.

Update on Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail

Alongside these future corridors, the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project continues to make significant progress. The project has officially achieved over 62 percent physical completion.

Construction milestones for the 508-kilometer corridor include:

  • Land Acquisition: All required land for the entire stretch has been fully acquired.
  • Foundation Work: 459.90 kilometers of foundation work have been completed.
  • Pier Work: 455.10 kilometers of pier work are now finished.

The ministry has outlined a clear timeline for the project, with plans to make the 97-kilometer stretch between Surat and Vapi operational by August 2027. The final target for the full completion of the entire Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is set for December 2030.
