Bagdev Junction Overhaul: New Bridges to End Itarsi Traffic

The unique X-shaped intersection at Bagdev, located near Itarsi, is set for a massive transformation to resolve long-standing traffic woes. This critical junction, where National Highway-46 intersects with the primary Delhi-Chennai railway line, has historically been a major bottleneck for both road and rail commuters.
To address this, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Indian Railways are collaborating on a strategic infrastructure project. The initiative aims to expand the highway into a two-lane configuration and construct a new culvert bridge, ensuring a much smoother flow for both vehicular and train traffic.
Massive Multitracking Projects in the Region
This localized upgrade is part of a much larger infrastructure blitz aimed at enhancing connectivity across the region. The government has been aggressively pushing for capacity expansion through several major projects:
- Itarsi-Nagpur Fourth Line: Approved by the Cabinet Committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 31, 2025, this project is part of a broader effort to include four major railway multitracking initiatives.
- Itarsi-Bhopal-Bina Fourth Rail Line: Sanctioned on May 19, 2026, this massive ₹4,329 crore project spans 237 kilometers. It is scheduled for completion within four years and involves complex engineering feats, including:
- 9 tunnels
- 4 critical bridges
- 39 large bridges and 191 small bridges
- 43 Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and 39 Road Under Bridges (RUBs)
Strengthening the Delhi-Chennai Corridor
Beyond these specific lines, ongoing work continues along the Delhi-Chennai railway corridor to expand multitracking capabilities, which will significantly boost the efficiency of long-distance freight and passenger movement.
In addition to the track expansions, the Itarsi railway station is also slated for a comprehensive redevelopment. This project is designed to modernize the station, incorporating high-end amenities to provide a world-class experience for passengers traveling through this vital Madhya Pradesh hub.
