The Bairabi-Sairang railway line celebrated its first anniversary of operations on September 13, 2026, marking a massive milestone in rail connectivity for the state of Mizoram. This crucial infrastructure project has successfully redefined travel, freight movement, and economic opportunities in the northeastern region over the past year. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conference on September 13, 2025, the 51.38 km project was completed at a staggering cost of approximately ₹8,000 crore. The engineering marvel comprises 153 bridges, including a towering 114-meter-tall structure, and 45 tunnels stretching nearly 16 km through rugged terrain. In its inaugural year, the line facilitated travel for over 15 lakh passengers, with the Sairang railway station alone recording 5.54 lakh passenger movements. Commercial demand has been exceptionally high, driven by key services connecting the region to major Indian cities.
Passenger services have witnessed overwhelming response from locals and tourists alike. The
Kolkata-Sairang Express has maintained an impressive average occupancy rate exceeding
140%. Other prominent routes such as the
Sairang-Guwahati service and the
Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express have reported robust occupancy rates of over
110% and
145%, respectively. According to the Press Information Bureau, these passenger services generated approximately
₹54 crore in ticket sales for Indian Railways within the first year of operation. Building upon this success, Union Minister of Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the
Sairang-Silchar passenger service in January 2026 to further bolster regional mobility and passenger convenience.
Freight operations have also witnessed stellar growth, acting as a lifeline for trade and commerce in Mizoram. The railway line successfully handled
more than 2,500 wagons of freight in its first year. Construction materials comprised
70% of this cargo, providing essential backing for local infrastructure development, while
156 wagons were exclusively dedicated to the transport of automobiles. The very first freight train reached Sairang on
September 14, 2025, shortly after the station's inauguration, with commercial freight services officially commencing on
September 18, 2025. The Ministry of Railways has highlighted that the Bairabi-Sairang rail project has successfully transformed mobility, market access, and tourism opportunities for the people of Mizoram, paving the way for sustained economic prosperity in the region.
