Barmer Rishikesh Express goes fully electric to end Bathinda engine changes

The Barmer-Rishikesh Express is now operating entirely with electric traction following the complete electrification of its entire railway route, a major upgrade that improves overall journey efficiency for passengers traveling across Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. North Western Railway has successfully eliminated the long-standing requirement for a locomotive swap at Bathinda station, marking a significant milestone in modernizing regional rail connectivity. Passengers traveling on this route can now experience smoother operations and better punctuality. The 14887 Rishikesh-Barmer Express began its full electric service on April 9, 2026, while the 14888 Barmer-Rishikesh Express commenced its electric-only operation from Barmer on April 10, 2026. Jodhpur Divisional Railway Manager Anurag Tripathi confirmed the successful rollout of this transition across the division.

Operational Benefits of the Electric Transition

Previously, the popular train operated with an electric engine only between Barmer and Bathinda, which necessitated a mandatory switch to a diesel locomotive for the remainder of the journey toward Haridwar and Rishikesh. This engine reversal and locomotive change at Bathinda often added operational delays to the timetable. By removing this bottleneck, the train now runs seamlessly on electric power from its point of origin to its final destination. The train continues to maintain its scheduled operational halt at Merta Road Junction for passenger convenience.

The complete shift to electric traction is designed to drastically streamline train operations, improve punctuality across the board, significantly reduce high diesel consumption, and actively support Indian Railways sustainability goals. This infrastructure upgrade eliminates intermediate delays, saving valuable operational time and contributing to a greener, cleaner railway network.
