Bastar to Visakhapatnam: Huge Rail Connectivity Boost

The Bastar region of Chhattisgarh is set for a massive logistical transformation. Indian Railways has unveiled an ambitious long-term vision to connect this remote area directly to the coastal city of Visakhapatnam via Koraput.
Expanding the Network: Rowghat to Jagdalpur
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed that the current focus involves extending the rail line from Rowghat to Jagdalpur. This strategic expansion is intended to link the region through Koraput in Odisha, eventually reaching Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The Minister assured that the federal government will provide the necessary funding to complete these vital infrastructure projects.
A Historic Milestone for Kanker
This development follows the recent inauguration of the Tadoki-Rowghat line. This marks a historic moment for the Kanker district, as it is the first time the area has been connected to the railway network since India's independence. Additionally, the Abhanpur-Kurud broad-gauge line has also been opened as part of the state's ongoing development efforts.
Boosting Socio-Economic Growth
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai emphasized that these rail projects are critical for the progress of tribal and remote communities. The new connectivity is expected to unlock several key opportunities:
- Education and Healthcare: Providing easier access to essential services and institutions.
- Trade and Employment: Opening new avenues for local businesses and job seekers.
- Tourism: Making the Bastar region more accessible to visitors.
To expedite the process, the Chief Minister has directed that land acquisition for the Rowghat-Jagdalpur line be treated as a top priority.
Massive Infrastructure Investment
The scale of railway development in Chhattisgarh is significant, with projects valued at approximately ₹57,000 crore currently under implementation. The state has also achieved a major milestone by reaching 100% railway electrification.
Major Breakthroughs and Corridors
In a significant step for regional integration, the East Coast Railway recently achieved a major tunnel breakthrough on the 189-kilometer Kottavalasa–Koraput doubling project, a venture worth ₹3,580 crore.
Alongside these rail works, the ₹16,491 crore Raipur-Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor (NH-130 CD) is being developed. This corridor will work in tandem with the rail expansion to integrate Bastar’s industrial and agricultural output into broader national markets.
