A new era of high-speed travel is arriving on the Bengaluru-Goa route, but it comes with a significant trade-off for thousands of regular commuters. The Railway Board has officially approved the introduction of the Bengaluru-Goa Vande Bharat Express (train numbers 26655/26656), which is expected to launch in the third week of November 2026. While the new service will provide a premium experience for approximately 1,100 passengers daily, its operational priority is set to disrupt the schedules of 13 existing trains.

This decision is projected to impact nearly 15,000 regular commuters who rely on the current rail services. The disruption stems from the logistical challenges of the route, specifically regarding how the new high-speed service will be integrated into the existing timetable.

The Western Ghats Bottleneck

The primary reason for the upcoming schedule changes is the 55-kilometer Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road section located within the Western Ghats. Because this stretch of track has limited capacity, the Railway Board has decided to prioritize the transit of the Vande Bharat Express through this difficult terrain. Consequently, other trains must yield to the premium service, leading to significant delays for existing passenger lines.

Which Trains Will Face Delays?

Several long-standing services are expected to undergo major timing adjustments. The most significant impacts are anticipated for the following trains:

  • Gomateshwar Express (16576): This train, which currently arrives in Bengaluru at 4:30 p.m., may face extreme delays, with its arrival potentially pushed back to 10:15 p.m.
  • Karwar-Bengaluru Express (16516): The arrival time for this service could shift from its usual 8:50 p.m. to as late as 10:15 p.m.
  • Other Services: Various other trains operating on this route are expected to experience delays ranging between 10 and 25 minutes.

Political Opposition and Launch Details

The proposed rescheduling has met with strong resistance from local representatives. Captain Brijesh Chowta, the Member of Parliament for Dakshina Kannada, has formally written to the Union Railway Minister to object to these modifications, specifically highlighting the heavy inconvenience the changes will cause to the Gomateshwar Express passengers.

The new Bengaluru-Goa Vande Bharat Express is slated to operate six days a week, with Wednesdays being the only day the service will not run. While the service is anticipated to begin operations in the third week of November 2026, the exact commencement date is still awaiting final confirmation.
