Bhatni-Aunrihar Rail Doubling: 25km Left to Completion!
North Eastern Railway is finishing the 117-km Bhatni-Aunrihar doubling project, including a new bridge over the Ghaghra River for faster travel.

The North Eastern Railway (NER) is entering the final sprint of a massive infrastructure overhaul. The 117-kilometer Bhatni-Aunrihar rail doubling and electrification project is moving into its home stretch, with only 25 kilometers of construction remaining to transform connectivity across the Deoria, Ballia, Mau, and Ghazipur districts of Uttar Pradesh.
A Modern Engineering Marvel Over the Ghaghra River
A major highlight of this project is the construction of a massive, high-level double-line rail bridge over the Ghaghra (Saryu) River at Turtipar. This modern engineering feat is set to replace an aging, single-line bridge that has been in service since the British era.
Designed to meet modern high-speed requirements, the new bridge will accommodate train speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. Currently, the superstructure and track-laying works for this critical bridge, executed by SP Singla Constructions, are nearing completion.
Progress Report: 89 Kilometers Already Operational
While the final 25 kilometers are under intense construction, the project has already seen significant success. To date, over 89 kilometers of the route have been successfully commissioned, including the following vital sections:
- Kiriharapur-Indara
- Sadat-Aunrihar
- Bhatni-Peokol
- Mau-Dullahpur
Solving the Congestion Crisis
The primary driver behind this project is the need to fix a massive bottleneck. Currently, the line faces a staggering capacity utilization of 118 percent, which leads to frequent bottlenecks and scheduling issues. By completing the doubling and electrification, the North Eastern Railway aims to achieve several key goals:
- Reduce train delays: More tracks mean smoother movement and fewer waiting periods.
- Increase operational speeds: Modernized infrastructure allows for much faster transit.
- Enhance safety: Upgraded tracks and electrification improve overall safety standards.
- Alleviate congestion: The route will serve as a vital alternative to the heavily crowded Allahabad-Mughalsarai line.
As the final stretches of construction continue, the completion of this project promises to revolutionize rail travel and freight movement across eastern Uttar Pradesh.
