Bikaner Kotgate Underbridge & Sankhla Subway Proposed

The Indian Railways has officially submitted an affidavit to the High Court, presenting a strategic infrastructure plan to alleviate the mounting traffic congestion in Bikaner. The proposal highlights the construction of a new Bikaner Kotgate underbridge (a two-way road underbridge) and a pedestrian subway at the Sankhla railway crossing to streamline movement in the city.
Significant Financial Backing for Urban Projects
These infrastructure developments are backed by substantial financial commitments approved throughout 2026. In April 2026, the Rajasthan Finance Department issued a revised financial sanction, which raised the total allocation for both the Kotgate and Sankhla projects to ₹57 crore under the 2025-26 budget. To ensure the projects move forward without delay, an additional ₹22 crore was subsequently approved, placing these developments at the center of regional urban planning.
Technical Design and Flood Prevention
The design for the Kotgate project has undergone several revisions to better suit the local landscape. The current plan features a single-lane model stretching approximately 200 meters in length, extending from Phad Bazaar to the area just before the historic Kotgate structure.
To address technical concerns regarding waterlogging, authorities have integrated a specialized rainwater harvesting system into the design. This system will include:
- Deep wells to manage groundwater levels.
- High-capacity motors to ensure efficient drainage during heavy rains.
Local Debate and Stakeholder Concerns
While the project aims to improve mobility, it has become a subject of intense local discussion. Following
