Bilaspur Vande Bharat Depot Gets High-Tech Upgrade

The South East Central Railway (SECR) has officially operationalized a state-of-the-art maintenance depot in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. This cutting-edge facility is designed to provide specialized upkeep for the nation's most advanced rolling stock, specifically the Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat train sets.

As only the fourth facility of its kind in India dedicated to Vande Bharat maintenance, this depot marks a significant milestone in the modernization of the Indian Railways network. It is already actively servicing the Bilaspur–Nagpur Vande Bharat Express and is fully equipped to handle massive 16-coach Vande Bharat rakes.

Advanced Infrastructure and High-Tech Amenities

The construction of this massive facility involved a significant investment, with costs estimated to be between ₹96.18 crore and ₹150 crore. To ensure the highest standards of maintenance, the depot features a wide array of sophisticated technological infrastructure:

  • Heavy Repair Shed: A massive 220-meter-long shed designed for extensive maintenance work.
  • Heavy Lifting Capacity: A powerful 25-ton EOT crane to manage heavy components.
  • Precision Systems: Synchronized jacking systems to facilitate safe and accurate coach lifting.
  • Automated Cleaning: Integrated automated coach washing plants to maintain train cleanliness.
  • Safe Inspection Protocols: Retractable Overhead Equipment (OHE) that allows for safer and more efficient inspection procedures.

Safety-First Approach with Smart Technology

Beyond mechanical upgrades, the Bilaspur depot is setting new benchmarks in worker safety. As of October 31, 2026, the facility has implemented sensor-enabled smart helmets for its railway staff.

These intelligent devices are a game-changer for maintenance personnel. They provide real-time alerts to workers when they are operating in close proximity to Overhead Equipment (OHE), significantly reducing the risk of electrical accidents and ensuring a safer working environment during complex maintenance procedures.

This facility serves as a vital hub within the regional railway network, ensuring that the reliability and performance of modern high-speed trains are maintained at the highest possible level.
