Indian Railways plans high speed bullet train corridor connecting Delhi to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar

Railway Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw announced plans to extend India's high-speed bullet train project to major cities across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, directly linking them to the national capital. The announcement was made on Monday, August 31, 2026, during the inauguration of the newly electrified Nepalganj Road-Nanpara-Bahraich rail section.

The proposed corridor is set to significantly reduce transit times between Delhi and key regional hubs, making travel between Delhi and Patna possible in approximately 4.5 hours.

Projected Travel Times and Distances

According to project estimates, the new high-speed rail infrastructure will drastically cut travel durations across northern India. The 200 km trip to Agra will take just 58 minutes, while the 455 km journey to Kanpur will take 1 hour and 50 minutes. Further transit projections include 2 hours and 12 minutes to reach Lucknow (495 km), 3 hours to reach Prayagraj (750 km), 3 hours and 33 minutes to reach Varanasi (945 km), and 4.5 hours to reach the 1170 km destination of Patna.

Engineering Standards and Economic Impact

This project represents the next major phase of India's high-speed rail development following the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor. While current Vande Bharat services operate at top design speeds of approximately 180 kmph, the new high-speed rail infrastructure will utilize a design speed of 350 kmph and an operational speed of 320 kmph, matching the standards established for the western bullet train project. Government officials anticipate that this extensive rail network will significantly boost business, tourism, and overall economic activity throughout the region, specifically driving growth for religious tourism centers located in Agra, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, and Patna.
