Bullet Train: Massive Milestone Achieved in Vadodara

The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has reached a monumental construction milestone in Gujarat. In a significant technical achievement, all 14 portal beams have been successfully installed over the heavily trafficked Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani railway line in Vadodara.

This engineering feat ensures that standard train operations continue uninterrupted on the existing tracks while the elevated Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor is constructed directly overhead.

Engineering Strength Over Busy Tracks

Constructing these massive structures was a complex task due to the restricted workspace and the need to maintain heavy railway traffic. Each portal beam, weighing approximately 1,500 tonnes, was constructed in-situ to navigate these logistical constraints.

The 8.3-kilometer bullet train corridor in Vadodara is particularly challenging, as it traverses densely populated regions and crosses five different Indian Railways lines, including two main lines, in a diagonal configuration.

The Road to High-Speed Travel

With the installation of these beams complete, the project is moving into its next critical phase. Engineers will now begin the launch of 40-meter-long composite girders, which are designed to extend the elevated viaduct along the route.

According to updates regarding the project timeline, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has indicated that trials for India's indigenous bullet train are expected to commence by May or June 2027. Once the testing phase is concluded, commercial operations are projected to begin within two to four months.

Transforming Connectivity and 'Make in India"

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is set to revolutionize regional travel, aiming to reduce the journey time between Vadodara and Mumbai to approximately 1.5 hours. Furthermore, the Surat-Vapi section of the corridor is anticipated to be completed by December 2026.

The project remains a cornerstone of the 'Make in India' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives. By collaborating with companies such as BEML to develop indigenous high-speed train sets, the project is driving domestic innovation in high-speed rail technology.
