Indian Railways has officially released the passenger footfall and revenue data for the 2023-24 financial year, providing a comprehensive look at the nation's most vital railway hubs. The report highlights a significant distinction between stations that handle the highest volume of people and those that drive the most significant economic value for the network.
Thane Emerges as the Footfall Champion
When evaluating stations based strictly on pure passenger footfall, Thane Railway Station has claimed the top spot in India. During the 2023-24 fiscal year, Thane managed a massive 9.30 crore passengers, making it the busiest hub in terms of sheer human movement.
Other major stations that recorded high passenger volumes include:
- Kalyan
- Howrah
- Mumbai CSMT
- Sealdah
New Delhi Dominates in Revenue and Scale
While Thane leads in passenger numbers, the rankings shift when looking at a combined metric of annual earnings and passenger footfall. In this category, New Delhi Railway Station remains the undisputed leader among the nation's top 100 stations.
For the 2023-24 period, New Delhi generated a staggering revenue of over ₹3,337 crore while serving approximately 3.93 crore passengers. This dual performance places it at the very top of the economic and operational hierarchy.
Howrah and Chennai MGR Central Secure Top Spots
Following New Delhi in the combined performance metric, Howrah Station secured the second position. It recorded annual earnings exceeding ₹1,692 crore from a massive base of 6.13 crore passengers. Chennai MGR Central followed in third place, generating ₹1,299 crore in revenue from roughly 3.06 crore passengers.

The latest data also identifies several other significant stations that rank highly in the combined revenue and footfall metrics, showcasing the diverse importance of rail hubs across different regions:
- Secunderabad: 4th position
- Ahmedabad: 7th position
- Pune: 9th position
- Surat: 11th position
