Central Railway successfully finishes high tech interlocking work at Jaulkheda Yard

Central Railway has achieved a major milestone by successfully completing critical non-interlocking work at the Jaulkheda Yard on August 21, 2026, as part of the ongoing Itarsi-Nagpur third rail line project. This development brings modern signaling and upgraded infrastructure to the region, promising smoother journeys for passengers and freight alike. Here are the key highlights of the upgrade work completed at Jaulkheda Yard:
- New Electronic Interlocking System: Replaced the old panel interlocking system to boost safety and operational efficiency.
- Yard Remodeling: Installed 11 new turnouts and removed 10 older ones.
- Track Upgrades: Two main line turnouts upgraded to 1 in 12 with thick web switches for smoother train movement.
- Extended Clear Standing Room: Increased lengths on Up and Down main and loop lines to accommodate longer trains.
Modern Signaling and Infrastructure Boost
Central Railway officials confirmed that the implementation of the new electronic interlocking system is a game-changer for train operations in this section. By replacing the outdated panel interlocking system, the railway network has significantly strengthened its safety protocols and signaling reliability. The integration of provisions for the upcoming third line within this new electronic system marks a crucial step forward in optimizing overall train movements along the busy Nagpur-Jaulkheda section.
Major Track Expansions at Jaulkheda
To handle higher traffic volumes and longer freight or passenger formations, extensive yard remodeling was undertaken. Central Railway successfully installed 11 new turnouts while removing 10 existing ones. Furthermore, two main line turnouts were upgraded from 1 in 8.5 to 1 in 12 and equipped with thick web switches to ensure seamless and safer train transitions.
Significant improvements were also made to the clear standing room across multiple lines. The Up main line and Up loop line were both extended from 710 meters to 786 meters. Similarly, the Down main line was expanded from 710 meters to an impressive 874 meters, while the Down loop line was increased from 710 meters to 800 meters. Additionally, the A and D siding was expanded from 60 to 65 meters. These infrastructural enhancements will collectively provide greater operational flexibility, reduce congestion, and pave the way for faster and more efficient train operations in the near future.
