Central Railway Special Drive: Carry Original ID or Face ₹500 Fine
Central Railway is stepping up its enforcement measures to combat ticket fraud and revenue loss. The railway administration has announced an intensive, month-long special checking campaign that is set to run from October 1 to October 31, 2026.
This massive drive is specifically designed to curb fraudulent activities, prevent the misuse of reservation quotas, and stop the improper use of concessions, e-passes, and Privilege Ticket Orders (PTOs). By increasing the presence of checking staff, the national carrier aims to ensure that every passenger is traveling legally and following the established guidelines.
Crucial Warning: No Digital Copies or Photocopies
Passengers utilizing special concessions or quota-based tickets must take note of a very strict new enforcement rule. Dr. Swapnil Neela, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Central Railway, has officially urged all such travelers to carry their original identification and eligibility documents during their journey.
The railway has made it clear that photocopies or digital images of IDs stored on mobile devices will not be accepted by the checking staff. To avoid being penalized, passengers must present the physical, original document.
Accepted Forms of Original Identification
To ensure a smooth journey, passengers should ensure they have one of the following original documents ready for inspection:
- Aadhaar card
- Passport
- PAN card
- Driving license
- Voter ID
- Any government-issued photo ID
- Student ID cards (must include a photograph)
- Bank passbooks featuring a photograph
- Laminated credit cards with a photo
Note for Group Travelers: In cases where multiple passengers are listed on a single ticket, it is mandatory that at least one passenger in the group presents a valid original identity document.
E-Passes and PTOs: Mandatory Conversion
For those traveling using e-passes or Privilege Ticket Orders (PTOs), there is an additional procedural requirement. Passengers must ensure that these are converted into a formal 'Authority to Travel' document before they board their train. Failure to produce the official authority may result in being flagged during the inspection.
Ticket Checking Examiners (TTEs) will be equipped with the TTE app to verify the authenticity of all tickets in real-time, including those for unreserved segments.
Heavier Penalties Under Jan Vishwas Act
The consequences for failing to produce valid documentation are more severe than in previous years. Under the 'Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026', which came into effect on June 20, 2026, the financial penalties for unauthorized travel have seen a significant increase.
The minimum fine for traveling without a valid ticket has been raised from ₹250 to ₹500. Additionally, passengers may be required to pay the full fare for the entire distance traveled.
If a passenger is unable to provide the mandated original documentation, they will be treated as traveling without a valid ticket, triggering these increased fines and potential fare charges.
