Central Railway Boosts Speed: 27 Train Pairs to Hit 130 kmph

In a major move to enhance passenger connectivity and reduce travel time, Central Railway has officially authorized 27 pairs of trains to operate at an increased maximum speed of 130 kmph. This decision marks a significant milestone in the ongoing infrastructure modernization efforts being undertaken by Indian Railways to improve operational efficiency across the national network.

Infrastructure Upgrades Driving Faster Travel

The ability to run trains at these higher speeds is the result of extensive technical and physical upgrades across the network. To facilitate these 130 kmph operations, several critical improvements have been implemented, including:

  • Track Improvements: Strengthening and upgrading rail tracks to handle higher velocities safely.
  • OHE Regulation: Enhancing Overhead Equipment to ensure a stable and consistent power supply.
  • Signal Enhancements: Implementing advanced signaling systems for better control and precision.
  • Technical Modifications: Critical adjustments to track components and technical infrastructure.

Central Railway has already demonstrated the success of these upgrades. Notably, 44 pairs of trains on the Daund-Solapur-Wadi section were successfully upgraded to 130 kmph following the improvement of 341.80 kilometers of track.

National Progress in High-Speed Rail Infrastructure

This speed boost is part of a much larger, systematic initiative by Indian Railways. According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, a massive portion of the country's rail network is being optimized for speed. By February 2026, approximately 23,713 kilometers of railway track nationwide had been successfully upgraded to support speeds of 130 kmph and above.

Nationally, Indian Railways has upgraded more than 23,000 track kilometers to support speeds of up to 130 kmph, with an additional 54,000 kilometers optimized for speeds up to 110 kmph.

Future Projects: Pune-Lonavla Corridor

The momentum of modernization continues with new projects currently in progress. Infrastructure work is underway on the Pune-Lonavla rail corridor to enable similar 130 kmph operations. Hemant Kumar Behra, spokesperson for the Indian Railways Pune division, indicated that the project is progressing according to schedule, with completion targeted for June 2026.

Prioritizing Passenger Safety

While increasing speed is a primary goal, safety remains the cornerstone of these modernization efforts. The upgrades include the installation of advanced signaling systems and fencing at vulnerable points. These measures are designed to ensure that faster transit is matched by enhanced security and safety for passengers traveling across the country.
