The Ministry of Railways has approved a rail flyover and a new bypass line from Gundabihar to Chandil with an investment of 343.97 crore rupees. Additionally, the Cabinet has cleared the construction of third and fourth lines between Gamharia and Chandil, costing 1168 crore rupees, with a completion target of 2030-31. An extra loop line from Tatanagar to Chakradharpur has also been approved to help maintain passenger train schedules.

Safety and future expansion are at the forefront of the current developments. The railway has approved a 193 crore rupee plan to install fencing along 270 kilometers of track from Asanbani to Jharsuguda to prevent elephants and cattle from entering the tracks. Division Railway Manager Tarun Huria also confirmed that the survey for the proposed fifth and sixth lines along this route has been successfully finished. The division achieved record freight loading of 154.97 million tonnes in the 2025-26 financial year, generating significant revenue.
