Northern Railway under the Ambala Division has implemented a major 36-day traffic block at Chandigarh Railway Station starting from September 10, 2026, and continuing through October 15, 2026. This extensive shutdown is necessary to facilitate critical infrastructure upgrades, including the installation of a new roof structure and the removal of girders from the existing foot-over bridge, a project being executed by the Rail Land Development Authority.

Phased Construction Work Schedule
The ongoing infrastructure development at the station is divided into three 12-day phases to streamline operations as much as possible. The first phase from September 10 to September 21 impacts Line 6 on Platform 5, Line 7 which is a non-platform line, and Line 8 on Platform 6. The second phase from September 22 to October 3 affects Line 4 on Platform 3 and Line 5 on Platform 4. Finally, the third phase from October 4 to October 15 impacts Line 1 on Platform 2, Line 2 which is non-platform, and Line 3 on Platform 2.
Impact on Train Services and Passengers
As a direct result of these engineering works, 442 train journeys are being cancelled, and 12 train services are fully suspended. Numerous other trains are experiencing partial cancellations with their origin or termination points shortened to Ambala Cantonment or Mohali. Prominent services such as the Shatabdi Express, the Ajmer-Chandigarh Vande Bharat, and the Howrah-Kalka Mail are among those experiencing schedule adjustments. Additionally, eight long-distance trains have been granted temporary stoppages at Mohali (SASN), and 76 trains across the three phases will arrive or depart from platforms different from their regular assignments. Platform changes have been specifically implemented for approximately 20 major trains.
Commuters have faced significant inconvenience due to overcrowding on platforms 1 through 4, which has been exacerbated by the temporary closure of platforms 5 and 6. Railway officials strongly advise all passengers to verify their updated train status, including origin, termination points, departure times, and platform numbers, via the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app or station display boards before heading to the station. Furthermore, targeted SMS alerts are being sent to affected travelers to keep them informed of the latest changes.
