Addressing Past Operational Challenges
Historically, the station has suffered from limited power capacity, which led to frequent operational hiccups including the occasional shutdown of passenger escalators and lifts. The upcoming power upgrade is essential to seamlessly accommodate modern amenities being integrated during the redevelopment. These include newly constructed buildings, additional lifts, escalators, advanced lighting systems, and comprehensive air conditioning across the premises.
Redevelopment Progress and Oversight
The grand redevelopment project is being overseen by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with the construction contract awarded to M/s Ahluwalia Contracts (India) Pvt Ltd. Union Railway Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Ravneet Singh Bittu have actively monitored the project development to ensure timely delivery. Although some initial deadlines were missed, officials currently anticipate that the entire project—aimed at establishing a vibrant multimodal transit hub for the Tricity region—will be fully completed by October 2026. As a brownfield project, all construction and utility shifting are being managed carefully while maintaining continuous train operations. Officials have noted that passengers may encounter temporary inconveniences during this final transition phase, but the long-term benefits will greatly enhance the overall passenger experience.
