Chandigarh Railway Station redevelopment nears 90 percent completion

The massive redevelopment work at Chandigarh Railway Station is progressing rapidly and has now entered its critical final phase as overall construction approaches 90 percent completion. This ambitious project is part of the prestigious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and carries a total estimated cost of INR 462 crore. While the official contractual deadline is set for July 31, 2026, project officials now project full finalization by October 2026.

Ahluwalia Contracts India Ltd, the private firm executing the reconstruction works, has formally requested a 15-day construction block from the Rail Land Development Authority. This temporary block is urgently required to facilitate the installation of heavy garter-roof structures on the concourse-linked foot overbridge.

Traffic Blocks and Platform Adjustments

Passengers traveling through the station should note that previous construction windows have already impacted train operations. An active schedule from August 8 to September 6, 2026, involved 12 traffic and overhead equipment blocks lasting four hours each. These crucial engineering operations affected platforms 2 through 8, resulting in temporary platform shifts for several popular passenger services including trains 12046, 14542, 15531, 12058, 54532, 14616, 14332, and 64516.

Furthermore, the 15903 Dibrugarh-Chandigarh Express faced a one-hour regulation between Saharanpur and Chandigarh on select dates during this period. Earlier structural work undertaken between July 20 and July 25, 2026, also forced operational changes, such as the 12046 Chandigarh-New Delhi Shatabdi Express operating from platform 2 instead of platform 6, and the 14542 Amritsar-Chandigarh Express being shifted to platform 1.

World Class Passenger Facilities Taking Shape

The Northern Railway Ambala Division is efficiently managing these necessary traffic blocks while round-the-clock construction crews finalize the new station buildings on both the Chandigarh and Panchkula sides. Work is also advancing rapidly on the modern air concourse and upgraded platform amenities.

Passengers using the station are strongly advised to check live train status, monitor station announcements, and read electronic display boards carefully to stay updated on ongoing platform changes and avoid any travel inconvenience.
