Chandigarh Station ₹462 Crore Redevelopment: New Deadline & Massive Transit Hub Vision!
The Chandigarh Railway Station is on the brink of a massive transformation. As part of a grand ₹462 crore redevelopment project, the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) is working to turn the facility into a state-of-the-art multimodal transit hub. While the project has faced eight previous delays, a new completion deadline has been set for December 31, 2026.
A 36-Day Construction Blitz to Fast-Track Progress
To ensure the project meets its new target, a major 36-day traffic block has been scheduled from September 10 to October 15, 2026. This intense period of construction is designed to accelerate the remaining work significantly.
According to Saurabh Singh, the Joint General Manager for projects at RLDA, officials are aiming to finalize approximately 90% of the remaining work during this window. The focus will be on critical upgrades, including:
- Enhancing cargo and parcel handling facilities to boost operational efficiency.
- Improving overall station safety and security.
- Streamlining transit operations for a smoother passenger experience.
New Parking Facilities and Infrastructure Updates
Commuters can look forward to significantly improved amenities, particularly regarding vehicle management. A new 10,000-square-meter parking area is being constructed on the Chandigarh side of the station. Once completed, this facility is expected to accommodate between 700 and 800 vehicles. Although the project faced setbacks earlier this year due to bitumen supply chain issues, work has now resumed.
In a broader effort to modernize local transit and improve safety, a separate new underpass was successfully opened in the region on August 21, 2026.
Concerns Over Aging Underpass Infrastructure
Despite the excitement surrounding the new redevelopment, local residents are raising alarms regarding existing infrastructure. A railway underpass constructed just seven years ago is reportedly in a state of disrepair. This specific project, which cost ₹7.25 crore, was funded by the railway (₹2 crore) and the Chandigarh administration (₹5.25 crore).
Reports from September 19, 2026, highlight several alarming issues with the structure:
- Structural cracks have developed within the underpass.
- Roof water leakage occurs frequently during rainfall.
"Superficial repairs are not enough," argue members of local Residents' Welfare Associations (RWAs). The associations have formally called for a joint structural safety audit, demanding that both railway and administration experts investigate the root causes of the damage to ensure public safety.
