Chandigarh Station Mega Block Ends: 442 Train Trips Restored

The massive infrastructure overhaul at Chandigarh railway station has reached a significant turning point. Following an intensive 36-day mega block, normal rail operations are set to resume, bringing much-needed relief to thousands of daily commuters.
Restoring Normalcy After 36 Days of Disruption
The mega block, which commenced on September 10, 2026, officially concluded on October 15, 2026. This period of heavy engineering was essential to transform the station into a world-class transit hub. During the Chandigarh station mega block, a total of 442 train trips were impacted, leading to various operational adjustments across the network.
Impact on Train Services and Routes
To maintain connectivity during the construction, the railway administration had to implement several measures. The disruption necessitated:
- Train cancellations
- Route diversions
- Short-terminations or originations of services
To manage passenger flow, many trains were diverted to run from Ambala Cantt or Mohali instead of Chandigarh. Additionally, temporary halts were provided at Mohali station to minimize the inconvenience caused to travelers.
A ₹462 Crore Vision for Modernization
The redevelopment project is a massive undertaking with an estimated budget of ₹462 crore. Executed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) with the approval of the Ambala Division of Northern Railways, the project was strategically divided into three distinct 12-day phases.
The primary focus of the redevelopment works included several key infrastructure upgrades:
- Installation of a modern through-roof structure
- Significant upgrades to station platforms
- Removal of existing foot overbridge (FOB) girders to facilitate new construction
As of October 16, 2026, the completion of this mega block is expected to facilitate the full resumption of all scheduled train services passing through the Chandigarh junction.
Traveler Advisory and Guidance
The Ambala Division's Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) has advised all passengers to stay vigilant regarding their travel plans. To avoid any last-minute confusion, passengers are encouraged to verify train schedules and specific routes using the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) or by contacting the 139 helpline. During the block, Mohali station was suggested as a primary alternative terminal to minimize travel disruptions.
