Chauri Chaura Relief: Bhopa Bazar Overbridge Nears Completion!
Commuters in the Chauri Chaura region of Gorakhpur are on the verge of a major travel upgrade. The construction of the highly anticipated Bhopa Bazar Railway Overbridge, located at railway crossing gate number 147-B, has officially entered its final phase, with an inauguration expected in the very near future.
Major Milestone: Girders Successfully Placed
The project achieved a critical engineering breakthrough in June 2026. During this period, the massive girders were successfully positioned over the railway tracks, a task that required precision and careful coordination. To facilitate this, authorities implemented daily two-hour railway blocks, which were successfully completed by June 26, 2026. Following this successful installation, the construction pace has been significantly accelerated.
Expected Opening Timeline
With the structural framework now in place, the focus has shifted to making the bridge operational for the public. Current targets for vehicular movement include:
- Target Phase: Opening of one lane on the side of the Shaheed Smarak.
- Estimated Window: By the end of July 2026 or by August 15, 2026.
Years of Planning and Engineering Design
This infrastructure project is the result of extensive groundwork that began back in 2021. A comprehensive joint survey was conducted at the time by key officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), the Railways, and the Bridge Corporation to ensure the project's viability and long-term impact.
The overbridge has been designed with a strategic dual-structure approach to handle varying traffic volumes:
- Chanda Mandi Section: The bridge begins as a two-lane configuration.
- Railway Crossing Section: As it extends over the tracks, the structure transitions into a much wider four-lane capacity to ensure smooth, high-volume traffic flow.
This development is set to drastically alleviate the long-standing traffic congestion in the Bhopa Bazar area, providing a seamless connection for the residents of Chauri Chaura.
