The Chennai–Tiruchendur Superfast Express (Train No. 20605/20606) has officially entered a new era of travel. Passengers traveling on this route will now experience a significant upgrade in both safety and comfort as the service has transitioned to modern Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB) coaches.

The rollout began from Chennai Egmore on October 20, 2026, with the return service from Tiruchendur (Train No. 20606) commencing with the new rake on October 21, 2026. This upgrade, which was officially announced by Southern Railway on August 17, 2026, is part of a broader modernization initiative by Indian Railways to enhance the passenger experience across the nation.

The shift from traditional coaches to LHB technology brings several critical safety enhancements. These modern coaches are designed with anti-climbing devices to prevent coaches from piling up during accidents, providing a major safety improvement. Additionally, the new rakes are equipped with disc brakes for more efficient and reliable braking performance.

To ensure passenger well-being, the coaches also feature:

  • Fire-retardant materials to minimize risks.
  • Improved interior comfort for long-distance travel.
  • Modern LED lighting systems for better visibility.

Detailed Coach Composition

Covering a daily distance of approximately 779 km between Chennai Egmore (MS) and Tiruchendur (TCN), the upgraded train features a revised and well-structured coach composition to cater to various passenger needs:

  1. One AC First Class coach
  2. Two AC 2-tier coaches
  3. Three AC 3-tier coaches
  4. Nine Sleeper Class coaches
  5. Four General Second Class coaches
  6. One coach reserved for differently-abled passengers
  7. One luggage-cum-brake van

The new LHB rake was recently observed passing through the Chettpet (MSC) station, marking the successful deployment of this much-awaited upgrade for commuters in Tamil Nadu.
