Chhattisgarh Rail Expansion: New Trains & Facilities

The Chhattisgarh rail expansion has achieved a historic milestone with the inauguration of several new passenger services and critical infrastructure projects. On October 20, 2026, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai officially launched new train services connecting Raoghat to Raipur and Raipur to Kurud, marking a transformative era for the state's connectivity.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Raipur Railway Station, saw Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw participating via video conferencing. The initiative also highlighted the efforts of Raipur MP Brijmohan Agrawal, who played a key role in facilitating the approval of these essential services.
New Connectivity for Remote and Tribal Regions
This expansion brings much-needed rail access to previously underserved areas. The authorities dedicated two significant broad-gauge sections to the public:
- Tadoki-Raoghat section: A 17.5-kilometer stretch.
- Abhanpur-Kurud section: A 22-kilometer stretch.
Furthermore, a massive 95-kilometer rail line connecting Dalli-Rajhara to Raoghat has been completed at a cost of ₹1,628 crore. This development is particularly significant as it marks the first time since independence that rail connectivity has reached the Raoghat region, providing a lifeline to the remote and tribal communities of southern Chhattisgarh.
Major Locomotive Maintenance Hub in Raipur
Beyond passenger services, the foundation stone was laid for a state-of-the-art electric locomotive maintenance facility in Raipur. This facility is designed to support future railway operations on a massive scale. Once fully operational, it will have the capacity to maintain 300 high-horsepower electric locomotives, strengthening the technical backbone of the regional rail network.
Economic Growth and Affordable Travel
The expansion is expected to act as a catalyst for various sectors, including education, healthcare, trade, agriculture, and tourism. For daily commuters, the new services offer a significant reduction in travel costs. For example, the train fare from Raipur to Kurud is set at just ₹20, which is a substantial saving compared to bus fares that often exceed ₹60.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Vaishnaw for the unprecedented support. He noted that Chhattisgarh has been allocated a record railway budget exceeding ₹7,000 crore this year. These investments in new lines and infrastructure are set to accelerate the state's overall development by providing reliable and rapid transit for students, farmers, and business professionals alike.
