Chhattisgarh Rail Boost: New Lines & Services Launched

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai have officially inaugurated several major rail infrastructure projects, marking a significant leap in the state's connectivity. While Minister Vaishnaw oversaw the proceedings virtually from New Delhi, Chief Minister Sai attended the ceremony at Raipur Railway Station to flag off new passenger services connecting Raipur to Rowghat and Raipur to Kurud.

A Historic Milestone for the Rowghat Region

The centerpiece of this massive undertaking is the completion of the 95-kilometre Dallirajhara-Rowghat new rail line. Built at an investment of ₹1,628 crore, this project represents a historic milestone as it brings train services to the Rowghat region for the very first time since India's independence.

The 17.5-kilometre Tadoki-Rowghat section, which underwent successful speed trials and safety inspections in late September 2026, is set to transform the local landscape. This new infrastructure is designed to serve multiple critical purposes:

  • Industrial Support: Facilitating the essential transportation of iron ore to the Bhilai Steel Plant.
  • Social Connectivity: Providing remote communities with much-needed access to healthcare and education.
  • Economic Growth: Opening doors to new employment opportunities for residents in the region.

Massive Surge in Railway Budget Allocation

During the inauguration, Chief Minister Sai highlighted the unprecedented scale of investment in Chhattisgarh's rail network. He pointed out that the state's annual railway budget has seen a staggering 24-fold increase. Under the previous UPA government, the allocation stood at approximately ₹300 crore, whereas for the 2026-27 fiscal year, the budget under the current administration has surged to ₹7,470 crore.

Future-Ready Infrastructure and Modernization

The expansion does not stop with these new lines. The event also marked the laying of the foundation stone for a new electric locomotive maintenance facility in Raipur, which will enhance the efficiency of train operations in the region.

Looking toward the future, the railway department has several ambitious projects in the pipeline, including:

  • The development of the 295-kilometre Katghora–Dongargarh line as a joint venture.
  • The ongoing modernization of 32 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a project estimated to cost ₹1,680 crore.
