Cyclone Arnab Alert: Railways Gear Up in Vijayawada & Visakhapatnam
Indian Railways activates war rooms and relief teams across Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam divisions to tackle Cyclone Arnab.
The Ministry of Railways has initiated comprehensive preparedness reviews to mitigate the impact of Tropical Cyclone TC02B, also known as Arnab. With the storm expected to make landfall on October 28, 2026, the Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam divisions are on high alert to ensure passenger safety and maintain track integrity through Cyclone Arnab railway preparedness measures.
War Rooms and 24/7 Surveillance
To manage the potential crisis, war rooms have been activated at the Zonal, Divisional, and Board levels. These command centers are providing continuous, round-the-clock monitoring of the cyclone's progress.
A significant focus is being placed on approximately 600 kilometers of railway track. To prevent accidents and delays, officials are conducting hourly assessments of:
- Wind speeds in the vicinity of the tracks.
- Water levels to monitor potential flooding.
Strategic Deployment of Relief Resources
The railway administration has proactively positioned relief wagons containing essential repair materials at several strategic locations. These include:
- Krishna Canal
- Bitragunta
- Mamidipudi
- Visakhapatnam
- Palasa
- Ponduru
In addition to material wagons, diesel locomotives, power units, and ambulances are on standby at key junctions to respond to any immediate requirements.
Rapid Restoration Readiness
To ensure that any disruptions are addressed swiftly, heavy machinery and tools have been stationed at short intervals along the affected routes. This equipment includes:
- Earthmovers
- Tree cutters
- Specialized restoration tools
Senior officials are currently stationed on-site to oversee these operations. They are working in close coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state disaster management authorities to ensure a seamless and rapid response to the cyclone's impact.
