The landfall of Cyclone Arnab on the Andhra Pradesh coast has triggered a massive wave of disruptions across the Indian Railways network. With the storm impacting multiple states, more than 101 express and passenger trains have been cancelled, while several other services are facing rescheduling or diversion.
The cyclone's impact is being felt heavily across Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Maharashtra.
Major Train Cancellations and Affected Routes
Passengers traveling on key routes have been hit hardest by the severe weather conditions. Among the major services cancelled or significantly disrupted are:
- Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Express
- Rourkela-Jagdalpur Express
- Howrah-Jagdalpur Express
These disruptions are not expected to be short-lived. Official reports suggest that rail services may remain affected from October 27 through November 5, 2026.
Specific railway zones have already taken proactive measures to manage the crisis. The South Coast Railway has announced numerous cancellations between October 28 and October 30, while the East Coast Railway has proactively suspended 21 services to ensure passenger safety.
Railway Ministry on High Alert
In response to the escalating situation, Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conducted a high-level review of preparedness efforts on October 28. To manage the emergency, the ministry has activated war rooms at the board, zonal, and divisional levels.
The railways are currently monitoring 600 kilometers of sensitive tracks. To handle any immediate emergencies, diesel engines, power units, ambulances, and specialized relief equipment have been stationed at major railway hubs across the affected regions.
Impact on Life and NDRF Deployment
While Cyclone Arnab has begun to weaken after making landfall, the damage caused is significant. In Andhra Pradesh, the storm has resulted in three deaths and damaged 31 houses. Approximately 57,000 residents have been moved to relief camps for their safety.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 39 teams to assist in rescue and relief operations, including four additional units specifically sent to Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall in parts of West Bengal continuing until October 31.
