If you are planning to travel during the peak winter holiday season, it is time to prepare. Indian Railways and the IRCTC have officially announced the December 19 train booking schedule.
Mark Your Calendars: Booking Starts October 20
To ensure you secure your seat, mark your calendar for October 20, 2026. Reservations for the December 19 journey will officially open at 8:00 AM IST. This follows the standard 60-day Advance Reservation Period (ARP), which excludes the actual date of travel.
Since December 19 falls right before the busy Christmas and New Year period, passengers are advised to expect extremely high demand. To increase your chances of success, consider these tips:
- Log into the IRCTC portal at least 15 minutes before the 8:00 AM start time.
- Ensure all passenger details are pre-saved in your profile.
- Have your preferred payment methods ready for rapid processing.
- Use an Aadhaar-verified IRCTC account for a smoother experience.
Tatkal Reservation Timings
For those who miss the general booking window, Tatkal reservations will follow a separate schedule on December 18, 2026:
- AC Classes: Bookings open at 10:00 AM IST.
- Sleeper and 2S Classes: Bookings open at 11:00 AM IST.
New Insurance Rules and Festive Specials
In a significant development for commuters, the Railway Board is preparing to implement a Supreme Court directive effective October 27, 2026. This mandate requires the extension of travel insurance to all tickets purchased at station counters, providing better security for offline travelers.
Additionally, to accommodate the heavy festive traffic for Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath, Indian Railways is operating over 100 special trains throughout October and November 2026. Passengers can utilize the upgraded Next Generation e-Ticketing (NGeT) system, which has recently undergone server enhancements and interface redesigns to handle high-volume traffic more efficiently.
