Delhi-Guwahati Bullet Train: PM Approves New High-Speed Route
PM Modi approves the Northern Bullet Train Corridor connecting Delhi to Guwahati, slashing travel times to cities like Varanasi and Lucknow.

In a massive boost to India's transport infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially approved the Northern Bullet Train Corridor. This ambitious high-speed rail project is designed to revolutionize connectivity by establishing a rapid Delhi to Guwahati Bullet Train link, cutting through the heart of Northern and Eastern India.
Connecting Major Cities at Unprecedented Speeds
The newly approved corridor will serve as a high-speed lifeline, connecting major urban centers including Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Patna, and Siliguri. By drastically reducing travel times, the project aims to transform regional mobility and economic integration.
According to the Ministry of Railways and the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the projected travel times for key segments are remarkably fast:
- Delhi to Agra: 59 minutes
- Delhi to Kanpur: 1 hour 45 minutes
- Delhi to Lucknow: 2 hours 12 minutes
- Delhi to Varanasi: 3 hours 33 minutes
A 'Make in India' Initiative for the Masses
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the corridor is being developed under the 'Make in India' initiative. This means the project will prioritize domestic designs, local labor, and provide significant opportunities for the nation's youth.
The high-speed rail network is designed to be affordable for middle-class families and the general public, with fare structures positioned to be more competitive than air travel.
The government views these high-speed corridors as essential "growth connectors" that will promote sustainable passenger transport and stimulate regional development across the country.
Progress Update: Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail
While the Northern Corridor receives approval, work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) continues to gain momentum. The first indigenous bullet trainset is currently under construction at the BEML facility in Bengaluru, with the body frame undergoing essential squeeze testing.
Key Milestones for the MAHSR Project:
- Track Testing: Scheduled to begin between May and June 2027.
- Evaluation Phase: A rigorous two-to-four-month testing period will follow the initial track runs.
- Surat-Vapi Section: The government targets the operationalization of this priority section by August 2027.
Support for the 508-km corridor is also advancing, with the first Traction Substation (TSS) at Bilimora nearing completion to ensure seamless power supply for the high-speed operations.
