Delhi to Guwahati Bullet Train: PM Modi Approves Northern Corridor
PM Modi approves the Northern Corridor bullet train connecting Delhi to Guwahati via Varanasi and Patna with rapid travel times.

In a massive boost to India's high-speed rail infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially approved the Northern Corridor of the country's bullet train network. This ambitious project is set to revolutionize connectivity, stretching from Delhi through the heart of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, eventually reaching Guwahati.
A High-Speed Link Through India's Spiritual and Economic Hubs
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the development on October 31, 2026, highlighting that the route is designed to integrate modern technology with India's deep-rooted faith and heritage. The high-speed corridor will traverse several major cities, including:
- Agra
- Kanpur
- Lucknow
- Ayodhya
- Varanasi
- Patna
- Siliguri
Revolutionary Travel Times
The Northern Corridor promises to slash travel times significantly, making long-distance journeys incredibly efficient. Based on current projections, passengers can expect the following travel durations:
- Delhi to Agra: 59 minutes
- Delhi to Lucknow: 2 hours 12 minutes
- Delhi to Varanasi: 3 hours 33 minutes
- Varanasi to Prayagraj: 33 minutes
- Varanasi to Patna: 1 hour
- Varanasi to Agra: 2 hours 34 minutes
Affordability and Frequency for the Masses
To ensure the service is not just for the elite, Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that the bullet train fares are intended to be economical. The goal is to keep prices potentially lower than current flight tickets, making high-speed travel accessible to middle-class families, youth, and small entrepreneurs. Furthermore, trains on this corridor are planned to operate at one-hour intervals, ensuring seamless movement across the region.
Modernizing Kashi and Beyond
The project extends beyond just the tracks. A major component involves the massive modernization of Kashi (Varanasi) railway station. The station is being transformed into a world-class transport hub featuring:
- Six brand-new platforms
- A capacity to handle over 50,000 passengers simultaneously
This development is closely linked to the construction of the Namo Bridge over the Ganga river, which is targeted for completion by 2029. As planning continues for the segments toward Siliguri and Guwahati, efforts are being made to standardize essential components like girders and pillars to ensure rapid and efficient construction.
