Indian Railways removes Railway Gate Number 110 on the Delhi Howrah route to boost train speeds

Indian Railways is advancing its major infrastructure upgrade on the busy Delhi-Howrah corridor by removing Railway Gate Number 110. This crucial level crossing is being eliminated to ensure absolute safety and smooth operations as trains prepare to run at speeds of 160 km/h and eventually up to 200 km/h. Passengers and rail enthusiasts can expect significant capacity enhancements across this high-density network through systematic replacement of level crossings with flyovers and underpasses. Railway Gate Number 110 on the Delhi-Howrah route is being removed for infrastructure modernization. The upgrade supports high-speed train operations aiming for 160 km/h and up to 200 km/h. The Union Cabinet approved the expansion of seven high-density corridors including the Delhi-Howrah line handling 40% of India's rail traffic. Major ongoing works include 2,000 kilometers of quadrupled tracks and 5,000 kilometers under development or sanctioned. North Central Railway charged new traction sub-stations in Karchana, Kurasti Kalan, and Manauri for uninterrupted power. The KAVACH Automatic Train Protection system was integrated on the Prayagraj-Kanpur section since March 2026. Financial allocations include a ₹962 crore project for the Kiul-Jhaja third line and a ₹976 crore investment for the Danapur-Fatuha section.

Boosting Capacity on the Delhi-Howrah Corridor

As part of Mission Raftaar and broader capacity augmentation, the Union Cabinet recently approved the expansion of seven high-density railway corridors. The Delhi-Howrah line handles approximately 40% of India's railway traffic. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that major upgrades are underway. According to North Central Railway CPRO Dr. Shivam Sharma, strengthening of electrical infrastructure is in full swing with new traction sub-stations successfully charged in areas including Karchana, Kurasti Kalan, and Manauri to provide uninterrupted power for high-speed locomotives.

Advanced Safety and New Investments

Safety remains a top priority with the integration of the KAVACH Automatic Train Protection system on the 190-kilometer Prayagraj-Kanpur section since March 2026. This system marks a significant step in preventing signal-passing and human error. Significant financial allocations support these upgrades, featuring a ₹962 crore project for the Kiul-Jhaja third line and a ₹976 crore investment for the 29-kilometer Danapur-Fatuha section in Bihar. These combined efforts are designed to reduce congestion and allow for the addition of 40 extra trains on the Delhi-Howrah route, modernizing Indian Railways infrastructure to world-class standards.
