Railway Minister announces Delhi Patna bullet train corridor to cut travel time

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has officially announced plans for a new high-speed rail corridor connecting Delhi to Patna, marking the country's next major bullet train project following the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route. The proposed project aims to drastically reduce travel times across the region by utilizing Japan's Shinkansen bullet train technology. Passengers can look forward to a revolutionary travel experience once this ambitious infrastructure is completed.

The proposed project is overseen by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited under the Ministry of Railways and will span approximately 1,170 kilometers. Under the proposed route chart, the travel time from Delhi to Lucknow is estimated at 2 hours and 12 minutes, while the journey from Delhi to Patna will be completed in approximately 4.5 hours. Other notable travel segments include Delhi to Agra covering 200 km in 58 minutes, Delhi to Kanpur covering 455 km in 1 hour and 50 minutes, Delhi to Prayagraj covering 750 km in 3 hours, and Delhi to Varanasi covering 945 km in 3 hours and 33 minutes.

Current Project Status and Timeline

While the announcement highlights significant infrastructure progress, the project is currently in the development phase, with processes such as Detailed Project Report finalization, land acquisition, and funding securing still ahead. This corridor is designed to reduce a current 12-to-14-hour journey to under five hours, serving as a powerful catalyst for regional tourism and economic activity.

Concurrently, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is slated to open its first section between Surat and Bilimora by August 15, 2027, with full operations expected by late 2029. Furthermore, India is preparing to unveil its first Made in India bullet train prototype for testing by March 2027, marking a major milestone for indigenous railway manufacturing and technological advancement in the country's public transportation sector.
