Proposed High Speed Bullet Train Will Connect Delhi and Patna in Four and a Half Hours

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a proposed high-speed rail corridor connecting Delhi and Patna, aimed at transforming travel across North India. The project, currently in its proposal stage, is expected to cover the approximately 1,170-kilometer distance between the two cities in just 4.5 hours. Passengers can look forward to significantly reduced travel times across major cities in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar once this ambitious infrastructure project is completed.

The proposed route will feature key stops, including Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, and Varanasi. According to travel projections, the journey from Delhi to Agra is expected to take 58 minutes, to Kanpur in 1 hour and 50 minutes, to Lucknow in 2 hours and 12 minutes, to Prayagraj in 3 hours, and to Varanasi in 3 hours and 33 minutes.

Project Cost and Funding Structure

The total cost of the project is estimated at ₹1.2 lakh crore. The funding structure will see the central government contributing 60% of the costs, while the respective state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar will contribute the remaining 40%. The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is expected to oversee the execution of the project.

Timeline and Phased Construction

Construction is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2025. The project will be executed in two phases: the first phase will focus on the Delhi-Kanpur section, while the second phase will complete the corridor from Kanpur to Patna.
