Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced plans for India's next major bullet train project, which will connect Delhi to major cities in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Following the development of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, this new infrastructure initiative aims to transform interstate travel across Northern India. Passengers can expect drastic reductions in transit times once the corridor becomes operational, seamlessly linking the national capital with critical economic and cultural hubs.
The proposed high-speed corridor will span approximately 1,170 kilometers and connect key cities including Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Patna. Minister Vaishnaw made this significant announcement on Monday, August 31, 2026, during the inauguration of the newly converted and electrified broad-gauge rail line on the Nepalganj Road-Nanpara-Bahraich section.
Projected Travel Times and Route Segments
The high-speed network is designed to offer unprecedented connectivity across the Gangetic plains. Projected travel times along the route include:
- Delhi to Agra (200 km) in 58 minutes
- Delhi to Kanpur (455 km) in 1 hour and 50 minutes
- Delhi to Lucknow (495 km) in 2 hours and 12 minutes
- Delhi to Prayagraj (750 km) in approximately 3 hours
- Delhi to Varanasi (945 km) in 3 hours and 33 minutes
- Delhi to Patna (1,170 km) in roughly 4.5 hours
This massive reduction from the current 12-hour journey to just 4.5 hours between Delhi and Patna marks a monumental leap in Indian Railways passenger experience.
Current Status and Next Steps
While the Minister confirmed this will be the country's next high-speed rail corridor—marking the first to link the national capital with major centers in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar—a specific completion date was not disclosed. The project, involving the Ministry of Railways and the National High-Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL), is currently in the preliminary stages.
