Delhi will develop seven major railway stations into multi-modal transit hubs

Delhi is transforming seven major railway stations into integrated multi-modal transit hubs to improve passenger movement and reduce road congestion. Plans are currently underway to transform seven major railway stations in Delhi, including Anand Vihar Terminal, Hazrat Nizamuddin, and New Delhi, into integrated multi-modal transit hubs. This initiative is under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister's Office and aims to create seamless connectivity between suburban trains, metro services, buses, and Namo Bharat trains.

According to the development roadmap, these hubs will be linked via skywalks, foot overbridges, and underground subways. The project ensures last-mile connectivity by integrating metro stations, bus terminals, and para-transit facilities like e-rickshaws. IIT Delhi is assisting in the creation of an integrated route plan for these hubs. This initiative aligns with the Delhi Development Authority's Master Plan for Delhi 2047, which mandates that any Transit-Oriented Development project within 500 meters of these hubs must be integrated with a comprehensive mobility plan.

Station Redevelopment and Funding Models

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has emphasized that station redevelopment will fully incorporate various modes of transportation to ensure optimal multi-modal integration. The Ministry of Railways is evaluating multiple development models, including Public-Private Partnerships. Specifically, the New Delhi Railway Station is slated for redevelopment under a Hybrid Build Operate and Transfer model overseen by the Rail Land Development Authority. Other identified stations in this broader transformation effort include Kashmiri Gate, Sarai Kale Khan, Shahdara, Bijwasan, Safdarjung, and Okhla.
