Bhagalpur district is gearing up for a massive railway transformation with the development of five new junction stations. The Eastern Railway has taken a big step by opening the tender for the Godda-Mahagama section on February 4, 2026. This project, valued at over 6,500 crore rupees, aims to decongest the main Bhagalpur station and provide faster routes for trains.

Five Stations to Upgrade as Junctions
To manage the increasing traffic, five stations are officially being upgraded to junctions. Sabour will become a key junction with a bypass connecting directly to Akbarnagar. Pirpainti will serve as the connection point to the new Godda-Mahagama line, while Akbarnagar is planned as a western terminus for the city bypass. Shivnarayanpur is also set for expansion. Additionally, Gonudham is being developed as a ‘New Bhagalpur’ terminal with a specific budget of 310.45 crore rupees to handle originating and terminating trains.
Project Budget and Timeline Details
The government is investing heavily to improve rail connectivity in the region. The tender for the civil engineering and electrification of the Godda to Mahagama section is worth 531.23 crore rupees. Faster Travel and Bypass Benefits
The construction of new bypasses will solve a major problem for goods trains carrying coal and stone chips from Pakur and Dumka. Currently, these trains enter Bhagalpur city and waste time reversing engines. The new routes will allow direct movement towards Sahibganj and Barharwa without entering the city. Under the Amrit Bharat Scheme, stations like Pirpainti and Sabour will also get modern city center facilities and high-level platforms for better passenger comfort.
