East Central Railway declares high alert in Samastipur Division due to Nepal floods

The East Central Railway has taken emergency measures to protect rail infrastructure as severe weather impacts operations near the international border. The East Central Railway's Samastipur Division declared a high alert on August 27, 2026, following catastrophic flooding in Nepal that has tragically claimed 157 to 163 confirmed lives and left over 750 individuals missing.

Divisional Railway Manager Jyoti Prakash Mishra has directed railway officials to maintain seamless coordination with the district administrations of East Champaran and West Champaran to tackle the developing emergency effectively. Passengers and regular commuters should note that train operations will be suspended immediately on any rail section where rising water levels pose a threat to the safety of tracks or bridges.

Intensified Safety and Monitoring Measures

The engineering department, comprising dedicated trackmen and bridge maintenance personnel, has been placed on high alert for intensive patrolling of critical infrastructure. Furthermore, specialized teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) remain on standby to provide immediate assistance if situations deteriorate further.

This heightened state of vigilance was triggered by alarming hydrological updates near border regions. By 11:00 PM on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, water discharge at the Gandak Barrage reached 150,000 cusecs, with authorities reporting further rapid increases. The unprecedented floods were sparked by sudden swells in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers in Nepal, drastically elevating risks for border districts across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, India has already dispatched its first humanitarian consignment of relief materials to support neighboring Nepal during this difficult time.
