ECR Completes Kavach System Trials in Bihar

The East Central Railway (ECR) has successfully conducted the Kavach system trials in Bihar, marking a significant milestone in the mission to enhance rail safety. The trials, which took place on October 15, 2026, confirmed the technology's ability to automatically bring locomotives to a safe halt, preventing potential accidents.
Testing the Barauni Corridors
The successful testing was carried out on the 65-km Barauni-Samastipur and Barauni-Begusarai sections. This critical operation was conducted under the direct supervision of ECR General Manager Dimpy Garg and other senior railway officials.
Targeting Key Rail Corridors
The successful trial is expected to accelerate the implementation of the Kavach safety system across critical rail corridors in the region. The deployment will specifically target:
- The DDU-Patna-Jhajha mainline
- The DDU-Gaya-Dhanbad Grand Chord section
National Rollout and Safety Standards
The progress in Bihar is part of a massive nationwide effort to modernize Indian Railways. As of July 31, 2026, Kavach Version 4.0 has been commissioned across 2,633 route kilometers, with an additional 21,794 route kilometers currently undergoing trackside implementation.
To support this expansion, the Ministry of Railways has allocated ₹2,066 Crores for Kavach deployment during the 2026-27 fiscal year. Officials emphasized that the system is Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL-4) certified, representing the highest standard in railway safety technology.
