ECR Launches Rs 10 Lakh Travel Insurance for Counter Tickets
East Central Railway introduces an optional Rs 10 lakh travel insurance scheme for counter ticket passengers for just 45 paise.

The Danapur Division of the East Central Railway has announced a major update to enhance passenger safety and financial security. Starting from October 27, 2026, an optional travel insurance scheme will be available for passengers booking their tickets at reservation counters.
This initiative follows a Supreme Court directive issued on October 6, 2026, which mandated that the railways provide insurance coverage for tickets booked at counters. This new scheme ensures that travelers are better protected against unforeseen circumstances during their journeys.
Affordable Premium with Massive Coverage
One of the most striking features of this scheme is its affordability. For a tiny premium of just 45 paise per passenger, travelers can secure an insurance cover of up to Rs 10 lakh. This coverage is applicable to:
- Confirmed tickets
- RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets
- Partially confirmed tickets
Detailed Insurance Benefits
The policy is designed to provide comprehensive support in case of accidents. The coverage breakdown is as follows:
- Rs 10 lakh: In the event of death or permanent total disability.
- Rs 7.5 lakh: For permanent partial disability.
- Up to Rs 2 lakh: To cover hospitalization expenses resulting from train accidents.
- Rs 10,000: For the transportation of a deceased passenger's body.
How to Enroll and Opt-Out
Enrolling in the scheme is straightforward but requires a few specific steps. Passengers must provide a valid mobile number and complete their transaction using digital payment methods. Once enrolled, all policy details will be conveniently delivered to the passenger's registered mobile number via SMS and email.
Important: If you do not wish to avail of this insurance, you must explicitly mark 'No' on the revised requisition forms that are now available at all reservation counters.
Crucial Steps for Claiming Benefits
To ensure a smooth claim process, passengers are advised to take the following actions:
- Nominee Details: Immediately after booking your ticket, visit the designated insurance company's website to fill in your nominee details.
- Claim Deadline: All insurance claims must be filed within four months of the date of the incident.
CPRO Saraswati Chandra confirmed that this scheme is part of a broader effort by Indian Railways to prioritize the financial security of all its travelers.
