2026 Festive Special Trains: Indian Railways Prepares for Rush

Indian Railways has launched a massive nationwide initiative to manage the expected surge in passenger volumes during the upcoming holidays, primarily through the deployment of 2026 festive special trains. This comprehensive strategy aims to ensure smooth travel during the peak periods of Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja.

Boosting Capacity with Special Services

To tackle the heavy demand, the Eastern Railway has announced a significant increase in services, scheduling 1,354 special train trips between October 1 and November 30, 2026. This move is part of a larger effort to expand passenger handling, with the railway's overall holding capacity increasing by 35.61% compared to 2025 levels.

Enhanced Security and Surveillance Measures

Ensuring passenger safety is a top priority for the authorities. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is stepping up its presence with increased deployments on trains and at major stations. To maintain a high level of oversight, the railways are implementing:

  • Intensive CCTV surveillance across all major hubs.
  • The integration of drone monitoring at strategic locations to manage crowds.
  • The installation of baggage scanners at entry gates to prevent bottlenecks and enhance security.

Managing the Surge in Bihar and Patna

The East Central Railway is preparing for a massive influx of travelers, with an estimated 10 to 15 lakh additional passengers expected to travel through Bihar during the festive season. To manage this, specialized holding areas have been established. At Patna Junction, a new holding area has been designed to accommodate up to 4,000 passengers, helping to regulate platform density and prevent overcrowding.

Passenger Comfort and Operational Logistics

To streamline the travel experience, additional ticket counters, including mobile units, have been activated to reduce waiting times. Furthermore, administrative coordination between the RPF and commercial staff has been strengthened to manage station traffic more effectively. To ensure passenger welfare, round-the-clock sanitation services and extra staff will be deployed throughout the peak period.

Ongoing Operational Challenges

Despite these extensive preparations, the railway faces internal operational pressures. On October 17, 2026, the South Western Railway Men's Union (SWRMU) submitted a memorandum to the South Western Railway General Manager. The union highlighted critical concerns regarding staffing shortages and delays in employee promotions, which remain key challenges for the administration.
