18,000 Festive Special Trains & 1,300 Station Redevelopments
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announces 18,000 special trains for the festive season and the redevelopment of 1,300 stations.

In a massive move to accommodate the upcoming holiday rush, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that Indian Railways will operate approximately 18,000 festive special trains this year. This significant boost is designed to manage the heavy passenger surge during the major festivals of Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja.
A Major Jump in Festive Connectivity
The scale of operations for this season marks a substantial increase compared to previous years. While 12,000 special trains were operated during the same festive period last year, the current plan to run 18,000 trains ensures that millions of travelers can navigate the holiday season with greater ease.
Managing Crowds at Major Railway Hubs
To tackle the intense congestion expected at major stations, the Railways has established large holding areas at key locations to manage passenger flow effectively. These specialized zones are located at:
- New Delhi
- Udhna in Surat
- Anand Vihar Terminal
Each of these holding areas is equipped to accommodate approximately 20,000 passengers. To ensure a comfortable experience, these facilities feature high-quality toilet facilities, improved ventilation systems, and relocated ticket counters to streamline access for travelers.
Amrit Bharat Station Scheme: Modernizing 1,300 Stations
Beyond festive arrangements, the Minister provided a significant update on the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. A total of 1,300 railway stations across the country are currently undergoing a massive redevelopment process to modernize India's rail infrastructure.
The Minister highlighted several key aspects of this long-term modernization project:
- Progress Update: Approximately 400 stations have already been completed under the scheme.
- Future-Ready Infrastructure: The redevelopment aims to provide world-class facilities that meet passenger requirements for the next 50 years.
- Cultural Identity: Each station's design will integrate local architectural styles, ensuring the stations reflect the heritage of their respective regions.
- Seamless Operations: Crucially, all redevelopment work is being executed in a way that ensures there is no disruption to ongoing train operations.
