First Broad Gauge Train Reaches Nepal Border Following Historic Rail Upgrade

On September 1 2026 the first broad gauge train successfully arrived at Nepalganj Road near the Nepal border marking a historic milestone in regional connectivity. The project involved the conversion and electrification of the 56.15 km long Nepalganj Road Nanpara Bahraich rail section a route with 140 years of history completed at an estimated cost of ₹730 crore. The inauguration was led jointly by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Out of respect for the victims of recent flash floods in Nepal the event was held in a subdued manner without traditional decorations or a formal flagging off ceremony. Attendees observed two minutes of silence and Minister Vaishnaw participated virtually reaffirming the commitment to strengthening cultural and economic ties through improved infrastructure.

Extended Train Services for Better Connectivity

To maximize the utility of this upgraded line four train services have been extended to Nepalganj Road including the 14213/14214 Varanasi Bahraich Express 15132/15131 Varanasi City Gorakhpur Express and the 75109/75110 and 75111/75112 Gonda Bahraich services. This seamless connectivity is expected to significantly enhance cross border trade and religious tourism by linking the border region directly to major spiritual and economic centers like Ayodhya Gorakhpur and Banaras.

Key Dignitaries Involved in the Project

The landmark regional connectivity project saw participation from several notable figures including Domariyaganj MP Shri Jagdambika Pal Bahraich MP Dr Anand Kumar Gond Nepalgunj Sub Metropolitan Mayor Prashant Bishta and Banke Tourism Promotion Forum Coordinator Krishna Prasad Shrestha.
